Family Dynamics Shaping Tomorrow’s Consumers

“According to the sixth wave of LMX Family, The Ipsos MediaCT annual study of attitudes and behaviors of families with kids aged 0-12 year’s old, media and technology are a ubiquitous part of life today for families with young children.” Highlights from the study are below:

  • “The continued proliferation of kid-owned, internet-enabled, mobile devices has become a significant game changer, growing over 250% since 2011. With greater than six-in-ten kids owning these devices, they are empowered to program their own content selections—whatever, whenever and wherever they want.”
  • “There was considerable year-over-year growth in kids’ online and app-based activities across devices, and parents in 2014 were significantly more willing to pay for online content for their children compared to last year.”
  • “The impact of connected devices was also evident in how parents reported they now consumed media with their kids. According to the data, there is significant growth over last year in the percentage of parents who say ‘family media time means everyone is in the same room but consuming different content.’”

Media Multitaskers More Likely to Watch, Respond to TV Ads

“TV multitasking is on the increase, and some 82% of US adults at least occasionally go online while watching TV, per a recent IAB study. How much of an adverse effect does that have on the influence of TV ads? Apparently none, according to the study, which actually finds that “media multitaskers” (those 43% who regularly go online while watching TV) are more likely than the average adult to regularly watch TV ads and be influenced by them.”

Streaming Boom Stifles Music Downloads

“A little more than 10 years after Apple opened the iTunes Music Store and shook the music industry, it appears as if music downloads are about to suffer the same fate that many other forms of music distribution have suffered. After global download revenues declined for the first time in 2013, the negative trend appears to continue in 2014. According to Nielsen’s mid-year music report, music downloads in the U.S. suffered double-digit declines in the first six months of this year, as music consumption continues to shift towards streaming.”

A Positive Take on Negative Advertising

In this article, Quirk’s notes that “done right, a negative ad can actually have a positive impact on brand perceptions.” The article goes on to say that “when developing and evaluating and advertising strategy, you can certainly use negative themes to your advantage. However, it is imperative to be mindful of providing viewers with an emotional payoff, using tension that is connected to the brand story and leveraging negative themes that touch on a familiar and general reference point instead of being directed at the consumer or brand. Following these basic guidelines can help you use negative themes to garner strong ad interest and build an emotional connection between consumers and your brand.”

Tablet Ad Recall Level with Print

GfK MRI Starch Advertising Research analyzed reader recall of 28,624 magazine ads in 805 tablet magazine issues published during 2013 and found that “not only do tablet magazine ads achieve the same level of recall as print versions, they also reach a young demographic with high incomes and engagement. When compared to Starch Syndicated consumer print recall data, the findings showed that the average level of reader recall for both print and digital ads in 2013 was 52%. In addition, the top “Noted” digital magazine ads were recalled by over 80% of readers – in line with the most effective print ads. Tablet edition readers appreciated the digital magazine format and saw advertising as an essential part of the magazine experience.”
